Today's Lesson: Today we talked about geography. Students shared information about the geography of Bahawalpur and other regions of Pakistan. Andrew talked about the geography of the USA. Unanimously, everyone's favorite geographic area included the mountains. Mountains in Pakistan tower over most other mountains in the world (K-2, the second-tallest mountain is in Pakistan).

Today's Lesson: Following our lesson on community, we had an interesting discussion about culture. We talked about what constitutes culture, what we contribute to a culture, and what happens when we travel to places with different cultures or meet with people who have different customs. We also said our good byes because Andrew and I will be traveling to Nicaragua together for spring break.

Today's Lesson: We learned about some of the sports that will be in the Winter Olympics! We discussed our favorite sports, and we talked about the political implications of the olympics. Does international competition draw us closer together? Or does it promote negative feelings between nations? Overall, we decided the Olympics are a nice way to bring everyone together under a common goal of friendly competition and international unity!

Today's Lesson: Today we shared our homework from last week: all the students told a story using only non-verbal communication. We talked about memories and learned about nostalgia. Mark exhibited nostalgia for us by showing us the rest of his pictures from Argentina. Andrew is jealous of Mark's time spent with the tiger at the zoo. We got to see an AWESOME performance of "Wavin' Flag" from the students, and we are planning our performance for next week!

Homework: If the leaders of all the countries came together tomorrow for a meeting and you had a chance to speak with them for 20 minutes, what message would you give them? Would you praise them or criticize them for the work they are doing? Would you give them advice for the future?

Today's Lesson: Today we read several poems and talked about life, death, power and legacy. We read "Personal Letter No. 3" by Sonja Sanchez, "Grass" by Carl Sandburg, "Curiosity" by Alistair Reid, and "Ozymandius" by Percy Shelley. We had minor technology difficulties, but nothing too terrible! It was great to see all of you again.
Homework: Think of an ancient or historical manmade structure (a statue, building, sculpture, painting, etc.) that you are familiar with and write a few sentences about why it has lasted so long. How long in the future do you think it will last?

Today's Lesson: Although the connection was not very reliable today, we were able to persevere! We compensated for the technical difficulties from last week by extending the lesson by 30 minutes - we covered a lot! We read two more poems and talked about the food in the stories. Everyone was familiar with the food, and the class shared information about the foods that represent Pakistan: chicken korma, saag, paratha, and biryani were just a few. We discussed the value of art and poetry. Later we discussed animals in a poem and we talked about their value. I learned about the Bahawalpur zoo, the second largest zoo in Pakistan! Have a great week, thank you for your effort and enthusiasm this week

Today's Lesson: We read two poems (Fog by Carl Sandburg and Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou) and discussed the tone/mood. We also talked about personification, or comparing something to a living thing. We asked questions like, "What do you think makes a phenomenal woman?" and even talked about the media's portrayal of what makes a "phenomenal woman." Skype was very slow today and we had a bad internet connection; however, participation was great and we were able to get through it! So thank you to everyone who volunteered!

Today's Lesson: Today we learned about quotations and we studied a few quotes from influential people. At the beginning of class, students presented their stories from last week. Later on, we explored Gandhi's statement, "we must become the change we want to see," by drawing pictures of situations that bother us and then drawing a solution that we can create.
Homework: Find a quotation by someone who is influential to you. Explain why the quotation is inspirational to you.

Today's Lesson: Today we learned about sentence structure and how nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns all work together to create a well organized sentence. We identified both the subject and the predicate as well as the descriptions of each. Later, we completed a fictional, mad lib story about aliens attacking earth!
Homework: Your job is to create your own story! Make sure you identify at least two nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and pronouns. Be creative!

Even though we live in different countries and experience different cultures, we still have key objects that we cherish. Things like family and education are all important to us but what else do you love? If you get a chance, finish your homework and evaluate what makes you truly happy!

Example: One of my favorite things is my pearl necklace. I received it as a gift from my grandmother. It reminds me of my family, and the fun we have together at holidays.

Design a flag that will represent all of earth based on the common values that we share, and then write one paragraph to explain the symbols of your new flag. You may also write about the hatred and challenges currently present in our world that countries would have to overcome in order to fight together. If you get a chance, email your paragraphs to Taylor and Andrew. Next week (Monday, October 1st at 3:15pm) you can show your flags to Taylor!
